Cluster of 8 avian flu cases suspected in Pakistan

Chicken wearing surgical maskPakistan's Ministry of Health has informed the World Health Organization (WHO) of eight suspected human cases of H5N1 avian influenza infection in the Peshawar area of the country. If confirmed, these would be the first reported human cases in Pakistan. For more information, see the WHO update from December, 15, 2007. There are no reports of animal or human avian influenza A (H5N1) infections in the United States. Among the eight suspected cases are four brothers, two of whom have died, and two of their cousins. A team of experts from WHO have been dispatched to investigate.
